The Common Sergeant butterfly (Athyma perius) is found in the Himalayas, India, Burma, Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula.

There is a whole range of butterflies named after a military theme. There are Lance Corporals, several types of sergeants, commanders, colonel and a number of sailors too. The patterns of these butterflies resemble the stripes on the arms of the soldiers or the decorations of the uniform of a commander or a colonel.

If you look at this Common Sergeant butterfly, you will see three rows of white patches like the three stripes on the arms of a sergeant! Hence, the name.

Photos shot at Bukit Puchong 2.
