Cleome hassleriana, commonly known as spider flower or spider plant, is native to some of the countries in South America, including Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southeast Brazil. To date I have seen this flower only at Fraser's Hill in Malaysia. They come in white, rose and violet colours.
When temperatures warm up and the plant is exposed to the sun, it could zoom to 3 feet or more and the plant produces large balls of flowers with fascinating long seedpods that whirl out from it. They look good for the vase but the petals fall off easily after a few days.
The plants develop thorns and would best be grown where there is less human traffic.
